This is my double page spread for my music magazine. I have took up more than half of one of the pages with a long shot of emily to show the reader who the onterview is on. I have also used another picture on the other page where most of the interview is. The rest of the pages are filled up with the interview. I have also added a bog quote at the top so it grabs the readers attention. The title is put across both page so it can link them both pages together.

This is my music magazine contents page. I have decided to add just two pictures on this page and have added borders around them to make them stand out more. I have used the same fonts as I have on the front page to make it look proffesional and give it an indie/rock effect. The pictues i have used are from a gig and one of the girl my main story is about.

This is my first attempt at my front cover for my music magazine using my own photos. I have took a picture of a girl which is a close up on her face. I did this because I thought my mock up looked good with a close up on the front page as i think it stands out more than a long shot. i have gone for a simailar layout to my prelim i have donw this because i liked the way it was set out. i have changed the coulurs around because i think it makes the black and white picture stand out more.

This is another front page with a different layout. I have tried a different colour scheme of white and blue. I have also gone for a different layout where the where the other artist are on a different side of the page. I have also added a price and a barcode to make it look more authetic. But I prefer the other layout which i have done becuase i think it looks more proffesional.

This is an idea i have had for my music double page spread. I think i may use this lay out fot my final design. I have kept with the background of being black with a white border going around the side. I have chosen to do a big picture of the artist on one of the pages and three smaller pictures doing down the side of the interview. I have chosen to have a smaller interview so the reader won't get bored. I have chosen to have the title going across both pages so they will link together well.

This is my second mock up for music magazine. I have kept with the same idea as my first mock up but have added things to it such as a different fonts which i think make it look better. i have also added a white block where the title of the music magazine goes, i think this makes the title stand out more. I have also added the white border around the edge to make the pcture stand out more.

This is a prelim for a music magazine contents page. i have used a font which i have only just found and have decide to use this font for my frint cover splash, the title for the contents page and the splash in the double page spread. the reason why i like this font is because it is bold and has a rock vibe to it. I have also used a different font to have the stories in the page. This is also another font i have only just found. I also think I may use this on my front cover page for the sub headings fonts. I like the layout i have used because it is bold and is easy to read. The pictures i have used all link in to the stories in the magazine. i have used a white border around the outside of the page and around the pictures i like this and think i may use this for my front cover and double page spread also.

This is a mock up of an idea i have had for a music magazine. i have used a simple font which i wont use in my final product but i have just looked at the layoutn i may use. i have added a barcode which will make the magazine look more authetic and a section at the bottom with more music artist on. For the background in my music magazine i have used a picture of the artist the main story is on which i am going to do on my main magazine.

For the past few weeks have been working on my planning for my final design. I have been using powerpoint and slideshare for my planning and here are the slideshows.

Contents Prelim

For my contents Prelim I have kept with the same front which is on the front cover to add consistency to the magazine. I have used a side border on the page which gives all the page numbers on it. I have also added pictures which link in with the storys such as the kenya section and the west side story.

This is my first prelim for a biddulph high magazine. I have used a black and white picture because I think it makes the magazine look more proffesional and modern. I have used a blue title at the top of the page so it stands out and a sub heading about the main story over the top of the picture. At the bottom of the page i have used another picture of the new sixth formers and a bar code and logo of biddulph high school to make it look more proffesional.

This double page spread uses one half of the spread as a picture and the other half as the interview. I like how this page is set out becuase eventhough the picture and the interview are on different pages they still link togehter. They link in because the picture is the same colour as the interview as it is a black and white picure. I also like how the magazine uses a title across the medium long shot as it works well becuase the colours are the same. One thing i think that this magazine could do to improve it is to add a picture above the interview as the big space looks boring and it would look better if therewas a picture which links in with the intervew.

Magazine Double Page Spread 3

This is the third double page spread which i am looking at. The first thing I noticed is the picture which takes up 3 quarters of the double page spread . I Like how they have linked the picture in with the background. I also like how the split works well because they have three members on one page and one member of the band on the other. With them having a big picture the reader won't get bored as there isn't that much writing for the reader to read. Another good thing the magazine does is have the main member of the band not linking in with the background which shows hes the main member. The magazine uses one long column for the interview which they mark out in the black the most important statement. One thing i think they could have done better was having the text on top of one of the artist i think this is hard to read and the magazine could have chosen another colour for the text.

Double Page Spread 2

This is a double page spread for the magazine radar. They use a photo which shows all the band, the photo is very effective because it shows the whole band and can be relatable to the people reading it as they are just in a normal teenage bedroom. The picture is also relatable to the name of the band as they are called the teenagers. The magazine uses a bold title with the black text on a blue background. This makes the title stand out, it also goes across the picture so it links together well. They also have facts about the band on the photo which is also in blue so it stands out and carries on with the theme with the title. The have an interview of the band below the title which they use a big T which makes it look professional like a newspaper. They also use a picture of the lead singer by the interview to show what he looks like at an actual gig. They also have a border on the right hand side of the double page spread which just gives another bit of information about what else is going on in the music world. They use pictures to back up the information so the reader won't get bored.

Double Page Spread 1

This is the first front page spread I am looking at. This is a double spread on the image lily allen. The magazine uses a medium close up of the artist to show the reader who the artist is if they dint know. They use a striking photo of the artist which catches the reader attention. By the side of the photo they use a quote from the article below. They do this so it is showing the reader what the article is about and is just giving them abit of in foramtion about her without reading the full article. They use a black background for the whit writing; this makes it stand out more to the reader and makes it look asif it is from a newspaper. Below the quote and the picture they show the interview which is done also like a newspaper to make it look proffesional. they use colums and also a big I to start the interview off. One thing i think that this magazine could do better is add more imformation about the artist becasue i think they could say more about her and ask more questions.

Contents Research 3

This is NME magazines contents page. They use a side border for the left hand side which shows what is on each page. This is good because it is showing the readers what is inside the magazine, they also use bold red writing on a white background which makes it easy to reay. Nme also uses the page number in black so it is seen easily and not mixed up with the page title. Nme use a bold headline which says 'NME THIS WEEK' this is in bold colours and is jst a represtative of what the page is. On the right hand side they also use a side border to ellaberate on what is in the magazine this week, they give more information about the pages and split it up into sections. This is good for the reader as they may want to look at a persific section and they can got to it straight away. NME magazine shows the main story by adding a picture to give more information about the page. It also shows the page number and title which is in bold lettering so it is easy to see and also stands out to the reader. NME uses an offer to conplete the border on the bottom of the page, this is offering the reader the option to subscribe to the magazine. They uses bold lettering to show this so it is not unnoticable to the reader. NME also offers the contact details of were to subscribe so they can call them or go to the website straight away.

This is the contents page for Kingsize. As you can see they use alot of pictures for a border around the page which grabs the readers attetion. They use a bold red font to show whats in the magazine on a white background, they do this to make it bold and so the reader can read it easily. The pictures are also good because they show which page the artist are on because they have the page number in the corner. The photos they use are also show the artist face very clearly so they can be noticed easily. One thing i think this magazine could do to make the contents better is that they could show abit more about what each sections about so the reader gets a better idea. One thing i do like about the magazine is that the pictures contrast well together becasue the 3 down the right hand side are very dark and the two on the left are more light which could tell the reader abit about what typ of music the bands do.

Contents Research 1

This is the contents for kerrang magazine. They use bold lettering for the word contents for it to stand out which makes the page bold. One thing I think kerrang could of done better would be to have more bold lettering for the section which says this week, i dont think it stands out enough and the viewer will not look at it. They use bold pictures which grab the reader attention but eventhough they are a page in the magazine the viewer may not notice this and may only look at the pictures. kerrang also uses a picture of the front cover in the magazine which i think is un necessary and the space could be used for more information about what is inside the magazine. Overall i think this contents page isnt as good as it could be becasue they use to many pictures which make the reader not look or know what is inside the magazine.

Magazine Cover 4

Kerrang is a rock magazine which has a very bold masthead whichgrabs the readers attention. They also use a medium close-up of the rock band which is placed over the masthead. They can do this because the magazine is well known wheras some magazines cant as they arent as known. Kerrang magazine also uses a bold white title across the photo which makes it stand out alot more because the first thing the customer will see is the picture of the artist but if they dont know who they are they can see the big bold lettering of there name. They also use other photos which makes it look asif it has a border at the bottom. They put this in red to make it more bold and have the word FREE in capitals so it attracts more customers. At the bottom of the page they also put other bands which arent as big as the ones on the photos but still feature in the magazine. They also use a red background and white lettering to make it stand out.

The magazine cover for Q is a very well known magazine. The logo is very bold which makes it look professional because the main artist in the issue is never on top of the magazine name which shows that the magazine is bigger than the artist. They use a medium close up of the artist which makes him look as if he is pointing at you which makes the artist stand out. They also use a quote saying '' i am discus ted' which makes the reader want to see what the interview is about. Q magazine also uses another picture to show another band, They use a smaller picture but still use a medium close up to show the bands body and face. They use a smaller picture to show that the magazine is not just about the one artist even though they arn't as important as the artist in the bigger picture. They use all the subheadings in bold colours so that the readers can see them more clearly. They also rarely use red on the cover besides the magazines name to show that it is an important magazine. Q uses offers on the front cover to drag the reader in such as the quote '100 ways to get free music' this makes the reader want to buy the magazine and see how to get the latest music for free.

This is scratch magazine. Scratch use a medium close up picture of the rapper lil wayne which shows that he looks a strong charactor. They also use a man on the dj in the backgound I think they do this because it is putting all the limeligh on lil wayne becasue he is the bigger character and atrist which shows becasue he has the bigger picture. it also make him look like he is underneath lil wayne which he is in society. Carrying on with the main picture it is also layered on to the masthead which shows how important he is. The masthead is in bright yellow lettering which makes the title stand out on the dark background. Scratch also uses side borders as side headlines to make the magazine look proffesional eventhough it is a grime magazine. They also use grime text to link in with the magazine.

Magazine research 1

As you can see this is my first magazine cover which i have researched. I have chosen this magazine because it is 'Rolling stone', one of the biggest music magazines ever. I have noticed that the music artist head is over the masthead which is showing the reader that even though our magazine is huge, the music artist is even bigger. By doing this it grabs the reader attention straight away because the picture is very bold and strikes the reader. There cover colours are very professional because they stick with the traditional red white and blue which also links with the American country colours. The colour of the artist name is also the same colour as the masthead title which could also link with how important the music artist is in the music business. 'Rolling stone' magazine also uses headlines down the left hand side which works as a side border which the reader can see very clearly as they are in bold lettering.

My name is Ben Stanway and I am going to be to be analysing music magazines to get more of an idea of what needs to go into one to help me design my own for my media studies coursework. The items of the magazine i will be looking at are the front page, contents and a double page spread.
